early Madagascar prison button
One of the world's toughest prisons is Antanimora Prison in the capital of Madagascar.
This is an early button: Service Penitentiaire de Tananarive. Its backmark is T.W. & W. and H.M. Paris i.e. from the period the company of Hartog & Marchand owned the TW&W brand (1865-1884). Chrome 23 mm, high concave. the country was declared a French protectorate (the Malagasy Protectorate) in 1882. The king and his government did not agree. The French made it a colony in 1896. The H&M dates have been generally accepted, but I would have expected the prison to be set up in 1896. |
