I think that is the original (temporary) badge rather than the new ORs replacement for it. Note the RAC badge on the right hand trooper. The Cadet forces affiliated to the RWxY are also all wearing the RAC badge as they have yet to source a suitable replacement for the temporary (as it looks plastic!) bagde.

Some more info on the Royal Wessex Yeomanry badges...I asked them on Facebook and this is the reply I got.
"All Officers and Warrant Officers have to purchase their own embroidered Cap Badges. The Officers Gilt and Other Ranks Metal badges are still to be produced; a final draft of the Badge sits with the Army Dress Committee for approval. Once authority is received, the Badges will be available through the Military system. The Cap Badge that is currently being worn by OR's was purchased privately by the Regiment and is unfortunately in very short supply, with no more being produced. Those new to the Regiment, unable to get their hands on one, are wearing the Royal Armoured Corps 'Mailed Fist' until the new Cap Badge arrives." Mick

Thank you for the update Mick, greatly appreciated.
So the temporary black one will be a bit of a rarity when the new badge arrives. Thank you again 3dg |

And they are still very defensive if you mention the Wyvern word over the Dragon but too late now.

Just wondering if anyone has had any further updates about when they will be issued with their new badge?

The old black one has been sold on ebay from around £40 to £80.

As a matter of interest, a fellow collector showed me one of these a few days ago but not being interested in modern badges, l did not study it closely. However l am sure it was metal and interestingly it had those US push studs on the reverse in lieu of slider.

The new badge is in use. I know a guy who has one, came in a Firmin bag dated june 18.
The old plastic badge has push pins on the back. Theyve apparently have all been handed in. The guy selling them must work in the stores or is best mates with one of the QMs staff. |

Can you confirm that badge is in fact plastic, who made it etc. - I have one here in NZ and I don't wish to damage it to find out - I know, selfish. It seems to have been cast with some craters to rear and cast line to edge. No shear marks visible. One piece badge with silver paint/printed to front. Have to go out 3DG - images later. The man with the new issue badge also has one the black and silver one . He said it was plastic.
A close friend of mine, bobanodised and bess also stated that it was plastic, this was when they first appeared in use. |

The reverse of the badge, showing the fittings you mention (when I first saw those fittings on badges in about 1979 they were called 'butterfly clips").

Here are some images:
Height of badge is a little over 42mm Weight without clutch parts - 10.30g Weight with clutch parts - 11.15g When the badge is gently dropped on a wooden surface it rings like metal not dull as one would expect with plastic - also when touching the calipers the sound is of metal against metal. Would need to scratch it to see if any silver under the brown colour to confirm. I would doubt if it was made of plastic though. What looks like cratering is found to area to right rear. No shear marks to edge of badge but casting mark all the way around instead; difficult to see in image but easily visible when 'in hand'. This mark is an indicator of badge being made via the closed casting process. Of interest? Regards, Chris |
