Hi William
Superb collection, very impressive! Is there a reason for having a QVC RE cap badge or is that just for background? Cheers, Alex |

Hi Alex,
I am considering keeping them there to represent the Balloon Sections used in the Anglo-Boer war and also for the design/origins of the RFC cap badge. Lot of work still to be done. Regards, Will |

In that a bullion wire SAAF cap badge (like the brass ones) I see beside the Amphigarious Badge? I've never seen one before!
Nice collection!

Yes, it is a bullion wire badge used by the S.A.A.F.
There are various schools of thought and opinions regarding the period when this specific badge was worn. The "SALM" is in Afrikaans and not Dutch which implies that the badge was worn post 1926. I have been told by members of the S.A.A.F. museum that the badge was used during the Second World War. Comments are very welcome! |

wire SAAF badge
It was used in WW2 as you have seen my SAAF WW2 Crusher cap with one on it.

Interesting. I suspected that the bullion version may have been worn on khaki berets in Italy (unofficially of course) during WW2.

Impressive collection, but the unvoided RFC badge is considered a fake.
