Hi Alan,
All three of my Imperial Service badges have voided (hollow) crowns like yours.
Perhaps the solid crown type is less common.
Cheers, Tinto

PS I realise you may be referring to the depression behind the crown. That would be a maker's variation, I guess.

Were these made in silver? So maybe a way to save on the metal.........

Hi Alan

Mine is solid - I don't know if it's less common, though.
I hope someone can enlighten, as it would be interesting to know why this is the case. It seems too big a difference to be purely a maker's variation?

Cheers

Colin

Hi
My version is between both extremes. There is a VERY shallow depression behind the crown, more like a faint dimple. Possibly, it was intended that the back was to be hollowed as in Alan's pic but the punch or whatever didn't do the job!
Sorry but unable to give a clear scan

Its probably just a makers variation? I don't think they came in silver however they do in Gm (Brass)!

Hi all

I took a look at mine. The first two are identical, but the third has different cast marks. I also have a brass one that is silvered. But can't find a pic at the moment.

Instituted in 1912, the "Territorial Force Imperial Service Badge" was manufactured in Brass or cupro-nickel.

Excellent photo Jon.

I only have the one "badge". It has a hollow crown similar to yours Alan, but not quite the same.

The original owner has scratched his name into the back, but unfortunately there are to many options to pin him down.
