Default THE 4TH & 5TH BATTALIONS, THE ROYAL SCOTS

Hi team, wanted to get a couple more opinions on this one. Had it some time but took another look and feel there's something that rings re-strike. the rear definition not being so crisp.
Any thoughts on it much appreciated.

Thanks
Simon.

Simon,
I think that you are correct with regard to the lack of crispness at the back.

Even though the reverse is not particularly crisp, I cant really see anything wrong with it.
The problem with these types of badges is that a good old restrike is sometimes impossible to differentiate from a genuine one.

Thanks David and CB. I think I'll issue this a blue coded dot in my reference book - "to be replaced in time". I won't toss it just yet.

thanks both for your input.

Regards

Simon.

The center section is not crisp on the back, but the crown looks very crisp from the rear. Patina looks pretty good also, I would be happy with it.

Hi Dieppe, yeah see what you mean. I have to be honest I do have confirmed legit badges, with a double strike on the rear scroll etc. So I imagine there could be a chance that not always crisp could mean OK. If one comes along then I'll replace, but I'll put it back in the line up for now.

Thanks

The original badges are domed in shape while the fakes are flat or stepped. This is a repro badge imo.

I'm not sure about being domed, although I agree with Alan! I'm back at work but please remind me on Friday and I will post a quick "Hot or Not" on this particular badge! The keys are in the crown and thistle! :

A genuine one. Note the domed centre- the fakes are often flat fronted.

See what you mean Alan. As I said previously, it'll do for now as a place holder; but I'll put it down for replacement in time.

thanks for the pics.

Regards

Simon

Are we all sure that the domed center is not just a maker variation? I find it hard to write off every badge just because of this.

It might be just a variation as the badge was worn from 1908-37 but the fakes (and there are lots of them about) are distinctively flat fronted. I have yet to see another type that I consider genuine.

Hello All,
This topic has been discussed before. Here are my 2 badges.
The one on the left was given to me by a WW1 veteran who acquired it during the War. The right hand one I obtained fairly recently and has some pink Soldiers Friend on reverse.
Neither one has a pronounced dome as in Alan's example but I am happy with them.
Cheers, Tinto
