Default RAF Transport Command 1/2 Wing

Could you comment on this one... it was paired with a RAF Transport Command cap badge in sterling silver marked Scully Montréal.

The 1/2 Wing is also sterling marked Murphy.

Screw posts.

Thanks.

*** Forgot to add that it mesures 4,5 x 2,5cm

It's using the same sort of crown that was used on RAF Ferry Command.

According to Warren Carroll's book Wings. Canada and Great Britain 1913 - 1945"The original Ferry Command was formed on July 20, 1941 and revised to that of Transport Command on March 25, 1943".(p.114) His illustration 160 shows your badge, given as a Flight Engineers half wing with blue enamel centre and scroll lettering in silver.

He goes on to say that, "The author has not been able to local actual examples of the pilot or flight engineer wings, however discussions with several knowledgeable collectors indicate that there were some wings issued. They appear to have been originally produced in metal, but there seems to be an air of mystery as there is very little reference material available."

His illustrations of a pilot's wings and the Flight Engineer are based, he says, on "rough sketches, notes and verbal descriptions..."

The cap badge is in metal with blue enamel letter and two screw back fasteners.

I have scanned the relevant page for your records. I assume this is part of your cataloguing programme.

David

Thank you very much David!

I'll add the info to my cataloging.

I haven't done the uniforms yet, started "little" with the badges and military objects.

This is a good example of a Transport Command wing for Flight Engineers/Radio Operators. Since the publishing of the book quoted, physical examples of the badges have come to light. See www.ww2wings.com for photos, as well as the book "Eagles Recalled" for an updated commentary on these badges
