Boer War? St John's Ambulance Brigade?
Can anyone shed further light on the uniform worn in this photo which is believed to be that of an SJAB volunteer serving in the Boer War? The use of a metal chin chain rather than a leather one seems unusual
It has not been possible to get a better scan of the cap badge which may be the circular badge shown. All help appreciated. Jon |

More likely this one, I would think:

I suspect that in those palmy days even the SJA lads had a 'parade' uniform and of course would have added all the twiddly bits - chains, braiding and so on - which they could afford and/or get away with.
The Victorians loved to 'dress up' and I'll bet if you searched for 'SJA full dress' you'd turn something up. And, of course, that is what one would wear for a formal portrait. |
