JJBond - is that the 23rd Royal Welsh Fusilier badge? Sorry everyone - what is the best way of finding a good dealer? I'm doing this on behalf of the family so need to do the right thing!

Welcome to the Forum Brian,
Condolences on your loss and commiserations on dealing with 700 different badges !! If you had any badges that you can identify as King's Liverpool Regiment - I'd certainly be interested in buying. (It's the only regiment I collect to). Julian |

Brian,
I wasn't in anyway questioning you or your post. Sorry for any confusion I caused. I was responding to Alex. I hadn't realised that there was any expectation, from the forum membership, that you should offer your badges here before you contact any dealers or auctioneers. Phil

I'm actually Brian's daughter 🙂
My dad spent many hours (and quite a bit of money!) collecting his badges. I've spent 2 weeks matching the badges with his record book, 700 badges and 17 boards of 40-65 badges per board. I know some are possibly restrikes but I'm pretty sure many of them are genuine. I've learned much about lugs, lug feet, slides etc and my dad was as careful as he could be when he bought his badges. I'd be grateful if someone could advise me how I find a reputable dealer? |

We've had loads of people come on this Forum and ask about their badges, wether there genuine or not and how much there worth. They then disappear and the badges in question end up on eBay. Personally i think it cheeky to do this. We had one not so long ago, trying to sell an old ladies collection. He was a 22 year time served Royal Artillery chap, he got some information then disappeared. I don't think it would be to much to ask to sell to members on this Forum. Just my opinion though. Andy

Hello Andy,
With respect, I haven't actually asked anyone on here how much my dad's badges are worth 🙂 I'm genuinely trying to find the best way to sell them for my mum, be it auction, dealer etc. I definitely won't be selling them on eBay you can be sure of that! |

Actually if they are any good you might find that selling them on ebay gets you far more than any dealer who will offer you 50% of the true value at best or large lots in the auction house which will be bought by dealers looking for a 100% mark up....

You could well be right but there are too many badges (over 700) eBay is great for certain things but I'm not happy to sell badges on the site. |

Well you have answered your own question, You want to sell all 700 at auction so I am not sure what you want to gain from the forum?

Selling collections
I can understand how someone faced with the disposal of a family members collection of military badges looks for the best way to sell them:-
Firstly, are they all original? (if collected during the last thirty years there may well be some fakes) Next, most auction houses unless specialists will give a brief description and a photograph with a pile of badges looking like something from a scrap heap and charge the earth for selling them. Lastly, although there is no obligation to offer them to forum members, you may well have a pleasant surprise as many members will offer a very good price for a badge they want. Only an opinion, but one I think needs careful consideration. Rob |

If you want a quick appraisal, you would get a better idea of price and of originality from a good dealer, there a few who will do this with no obligation to sell to them.
You may get better money selling them individually wether here or another platform but that will take time and any offers may be derisory. If there are some rare, scarce or sought after badges they will do well being sold individually at a good militaria Auction House. I would suggest any fakes you have that you take them to your garden and hit them with a hammer Paul |
