5th (Cinque Ports) Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment
A 5th (Cinque Ports) Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment white metal button. Makers name on the reverse: I&B PEARSE & Co LONDON. Did the button style remain the same throughout the life of the Battalion or can this dated to WWI, WW2 or post WW2?
Thanks for your help Regards Andrew |

Hello Andrew
As far as I am aware the battalion only ever had this one design of button, although they may, of course, have used the regular pattern at some time. The backmarks used by Pearse changed very little over the years which makes dating one of their buttons rather difficult. I understand that they became part of the Compton Sons & Webb 'empire' in 1924 which would put your button before that date if nothing else. They used both 'I & B Pearse & Co London' and 'J & B Pearse & Co London'. I have no real evidence to back it up but I have always thought that the use of 'I & B...' was earlier than 'J & B...'. Thanks Roger.
I also have a brass one 'I & B Pearse & Co London' which I assume to be WWI period but didn't know how the white metal one fitted in. Regards Andrew Last edited by at57; 13-04-16 at 09:03 AM. |

Help with Cinque Ports Titles on 1949 battle dress.
Looking for some help in reconstruction of a 1949 battle dress. The titles are cinque ports but the titles at all I have.
Was wondering what Regiment, badges and hat/cap would go with this uniform. Would like to be periodically correct for reenactment. Any help much appreciated. Rob. |
