Found a Button with JR on it, ID please
Can anybody id button which appears very old to me

Difficult to see but could it be 'GR'? A crown over 'GR' is likely to be a general pattern volunteer or militia button, early 19th century.

The crown in your pic appears to have a raised surface the crown on my button is flat and is either stamped or engraved on to the button

Yes, I know the button is not exactly the same, I just posted the picture to see if the 'GR' lettering on the button matched that on yours. These 'GR' buttons can be found in many different styles.

The button certainly does not date from 1689! More like 1809!
