19th Alberta Dragoons
An extremely rare battle dress shoulder flash for the SWW post war 19th Alberta Dragoons. One each were worn on the shoulders, I believe the turrets faced forward (staghounds).
I think only senior NCO's wore these. The final price is very surprising. Mike http://www.ebay.ca/itm/371102611242?...84.m1423.l2649 |

I am not that familiar with this flash, does any one know what years this would have been worn?

I am not sure where the cadet site found their information. They are paralleling the insignia with the authorized designations, but have it reversed. The research I have indicates the Staghound was used prior to 1949, and then they were designated the 19th Alberta Armoured Car Regiment in 1949. Titles were supposed to reflect the official designation, and the gold on green ones were likely authorized when NDHQ settled the post war dress regulations in 1948, which included detailed instructions on exactly what was to be on the insignia. Symbols or designs were a no no, thus the unit would have adopted a word title and disposed of the Staghound armoured car patches. The patches were worn at the top of the sleeve.
Mike, what is your source for the patches only being worn by senior NCO's?

I had a girlfriend back in the day who's father was a Sgt in the 19AD, his BD had the staghounds above his Sgt stripes.

Interesting. The photo evidence I have show the Staghounds being worn at the top of the sleeve.

Here is the shoulder flash that goes with the staghounds.

19 AD badges 1960
I recently was in the officers mess and noticed this picture, the different capbadges worn in 1960. The one Capt appears to be wearing a CEF capbadge, some are wearing Edmonton Fusiliers cap badges (lowered tail) and the rest are wearing the raised tail 19 AD cap badges.

Mike, The information in the unit dress instructions file indicates that the title 19th Alberta Amoured Car Regt was approved in 1949, and the 19th Alberta Dragoons was approved in 1954. They were not worn concurrently with the Staghound patch.

Yes, I should have been more clear, only the Armoured Car flash, not the Dragoons flash. Mike |

I should have been more clear as well. The 19th Alberta Armoured Car Regt title was not, as far as I have been able to determine worn with any other cloth insignia. The image I have shows only the Staghound on the sleeve. No other titles. The 19th Alberta Armoured Car Regiment (Edmonton Fusiliers) was formed by the amalgamation of the Edomton Fusiliers and the 19th Alberta Dragoons in 1946. They were not authorized any title at that time, and with the revision of the dress regulations, no new titles were authorized until 1948 when the policy for regimental titles was promulgated. At that time, units submitted titles for approval, based on their current designation. It was at that time the 19th Alberta Armoured Car title was approved. The 19 Staghound patch was unofficial and was not permitted to be worn in conjunction with any other title. The information from the Dress Regs for the period indicates that the 19th AACR title was taken into wear circa 1949-50 and then replaced by the 19th Alberta Dragoons title when the unit was re-designated as such, November 1, 1954.
