Worn from when, on what, and by who exactly?

If you were a bit more polite then I might answer you. You have been this abrupt before and queried by implication what I posted and I gave you all the info. Not anymore, go search for your self. John.

Hi John,

Now I didn't know NAAFI personnel had a uniform and/or badges!

Was this purely for the occupied territory after WW2, or was this across the NAAFI bases, ie say in Hong Kong, Gibraltar etc.? It makes me wonder if the NAAFI branches in those days were run by service personnel whereas nowadays they are 'more civilian'?

I do see the tri-colour of the services in it though! Fascinating stuff - another piece of history disappeared from today's life.

Hope you're OK,

+ Anthony

On of my fathers sisters worked for the NAAFI in the early 50's and she was a civilian. I don't recall ever seeing service personnel actually serving in the stores when I was doing 'errands' for my Mum. david

NAAFI staff also served onboard Royal Navy ships, they wore No 8 naval action working dress with epaulette slides with the NAAFI badge on it. They trained in firefighting, sea survival and damage control and were used in action as part of the ships emergency party, one of their number, during the Falklands conflict won a medal when, during an argentine air raid, he took control of a GPMG and continued firing when the gunner was injured!

A Goggle search on NAAFI or Naval Canteen Service (NCS) with the Navy, and/or Expeditionary Forces Institute (EFI) with the Army/Air Force will show that NAAFI staff indeed did and still do wear uniform when serving with the Armed Forces.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navy,_A...rce_Institutes

It is still required by the Geneva Convention to do so in Operational Areas and by default on Manoeuvres or when serving on ship. But not in NAAFI Shops & Clubs in the old BAOR or British Forces Germany (BFG) as it now is.

Not sure which year uniform stopped being worn overseas other than in Operational Areas and on Manoeuvres

All NCS & EFI personal are civilians but sign on as reserves receiving extra pay when on duty.

Many such military uniform items exsist for other orginisations such as the WRVS, TOC H, Church Army, Salvation Army (which are uniformed anyway) Red Cross, Saint Johns etc

Default NAAFI badge

Thanks to all above who went out of their way to discover the info. on the wearing of these badges.
It would have been polite of the original questioner if he replied to my original answer to his question. It is beginning to happen more frequently that a question is asked and members go to some time and trouble to give the correct answer but, no thank you is posted . Manners cost nothing and if you can type out a query you can type out "thank you" John.

Sorry to hear that Peter,

My wife goes into hospital on Friday, if she obeys the Doctors, she's off her feet for six weeks, guess I'd better brush up on my house working skills, lol.

Dave.
