Dear Michel,
To have your question answered you must show pictures of the backs of these buttons. The resident expert can see if it is officers' quality or ORs. A backmark will help him date the buttons.

Hello Michel

The first button you show would seem to be an early pattern for the Royal Sussex Militia, probably mid-Victorian in date.

The second button is for the Royal Sussex Regiment and was in use from 1881 to 1959. This is the pattern of button that would have been used by officers during the First World War (most infantry other ranks used a 'General Service' pattern at this time). Of course, the actual button you show could be from any period 1881-1959. As btns says a view of the reverse might help identify a date and whether it is for officers or other ranks.

Hi Michel,

Not quite the same but here is an image of my early Sussex Militia button for comparison.

Cheers,

Roy

Hello Michel

From the back of the second button (Royal Sussex Regiment), I would say it is most likely to be an 'other ranks' button. Most, but not necessarily all, officers' buttons would have been of better quality.

As mentioned before other ranks in infantry regiments mostly wore a 'General Service' pattern button between 1872 and 1924. Your button looks quite recent and most likely dates from well after 1924 when regimental pattern buttons began to be re-introduced for other ranks. It is the correct pattern for the First World War period but most likely not the right age.

Roger

Hi Michel,

The previous posts say it all perfectly.

I have several Royal Sussex buttons in my albums for reference.

KR,

Pete.
