To me it looks very skilfully hand-embroidered to replicate the Ordnance issue sign. But I cannot imagine why this was necessary given that the whole Division probably had an issue of four signs each in early 1944.

Hi Mike,

Are you saying you think it's a replica?

Only in the sense that if (if) it's hand embroidered it's a near exact copy of the Ordnance issue embroidered on felt sign that was supplied in the Spring of 1944. Whether or not its a contemporary piece, I have no idea. As far as I am aware the first mass produced variant was that made in the Netherlands probably in the winter of 1944/45 and after that the "silk weave" version made in Germany in the late 1940s. Thereafter there are multiple variations all attributed to 7 Armd Bde from the 1950s to the present day.

It is called Brabant weave. A similar process was also used in Italy earlier and in Germany after the war. I find them difficult to date sometimes.

Thanks Luc and forgive me for not using the term, though I did know that is what they are called.

Hi, some more early rats plus the white stitched version, I'm still looking for a right facing version. The first pair are the South African version, the second, I believe maybe the first British version, it's certainly the nearest to the vehicle sign. The pink on khaki are probably British ordnance issue, I'm fairly certain about the last one. It came with collection of badges and sweet-hearts from Pembroke tank area. Hope this helps Mike
