Default Georgian Cross belt plate?

This oval plate with what appears No 1 was found in a field near to Stone Staffordshire.

It has the appearance of a cross belt plate do others concur there was a militia in the town and Yeomanry in the 1790’s

Stone went on to have firstly militia, rifle volunteers, volunteer battalions territorial up to WW2

I am quite excited by this item so need others eyes , I have seen other belt plates with four wires to the rear.

Regards
Stephen

Looks like a cross belt plate. Could there have been some other badge or insignis attached at the opening? Is it brass, as I've never seen a black cross belt plate before?

Hi Stephen, sadly I think it’s not a cross belt plate, the four fixings on the back look like a wire fixing. It could turn out to be from horse furniture, as the shape is also correct.
Would love to here others comments

Terry Norfolk man,
Terry hope it is clearer from the side image the number 1 is proud of the plate and not recessed.
Norfolk there are several examples of belt plates having wires and bend over pins when you take a look at cross belt plates in general of this period I have a feeling this is 1770’s period hence it being very plane looking,

I believe Bronze or Brass there is a green tinge to the patina.

Regards

Stephen

Steve,

I see now, it is not a hole in the plate, but a raised number 1.

Horse furniture of belt plate is is still cool!!!

I think the image is upside down and shows part of a gothic letter.
As an example a button with a gothic (old english) letter is shown.

Struggling to see this as a CBP and would be very surprised if that’s what it is.

The off-centre ‘1’ clearly isn’t a 1. Btns suggestion of a gothic U seems more fitting.

Having four fixings and their position doesn’t look like the late 18th and early 19th century CBPs I’ve seen, but admittedly I’m no expect.

Luke Btns,
Many thanks see attached looks to be a gothic 1 (one) as you can see from attached images many variants

Either way an interesting item worthy of further research also a thought a stylised I was used to indicate Infantry around this time seen on buttons!

Image three is very close however points on opposite side!

Stephen

Not wishing to hi-jack the thread, but some similarity to this plate albeit showing crossed cannon barrels etc?
No provenance to this item other than that it was found by a detectorist in the East Midlands / South Yorkshire.

If this is a red herring I'll delete this post.

As you can see in your own examples the thorns or whatever they are called, are always pointing downwards. So your initial image is 100% upside down.
I do not know any gothic numbers with "thorns"
edited: the proper name for these are 'spurs'
best regards,
