I would agree with Alan O.
However, there are some Scottish badges with a high ferrous content and can be picked up with a magnet but not enough to cause surface rust? See: https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ad.php?t=80193 Your badge appears to have the type of loops/lugs as shown in the thread. Regards Tim

I am not so sure that something on top of it rusted and transferred it to the badge. There a too many small spots through out the badge. Possible, but...
I have to wonder if there are just impurities in the metal causing this. Again, a good scrub will reveal if there is any pitting underneath due to impure metal, or if it cleans right off, which would indicated rust transferred from something else. CB PS, I might add that the badge is a genuine one of probable WW1 vintage. It is of rather poor quality with quite soft features indicating a rather worn die.
