Wiltshire Yeomanry Button
The 18mm button on the right with the crown could almost be anything, but Mr Ripley and Mr Darmanin show a similar one in their book on Yeomanry buttons as being 1830s Wiltshire Yeomanry Cavalry, I bought this example with a small group of dug up buttons including the later Wiltshire Militia button, so if these two were located in a similar place perhaps that's what I have here?

Hello Rob
As you say, the crown button could be a general pattern used by almost anybody but the fact that it was found with the other Wiltshire button could be significant. Can you read the backmark on the crown button? If Howard and Denis are right then the button will date from the 1830s and the backmark could help with the dating. Roger |

Hi Roger
I thinks its "FIRMIN ... LONDON", there could be more under the bent loop. Rob |

Hello Rob
Thanks for the extra information. Not much help though. I was hoping it would have been 'P&S Firmin....' or something that would have helped pin the date down a bit. 'Firmin London' would cover a very wide date range. Worth keeping the button though you may well be on the right track. Roger |
