49 (W. Riding & Midland) Inf Div Sig Regt.
On 12.02.57. at the 97th Meeting of the WODC, the Chairman referred to WO Letter 54/GenA/375, dated 04.05.51. This indicated the policy governing the wearing of embellishments by TA units. The Committee decided to approve the adoption of 'Arm badge- York Rose' by 49 (W. Riding & Midland) Inf Div Sig Regt.
Please can someone tell me what this Rose badge was? Thanks, Stephen. |

Stephen,
I cannot find it at present but I have an embroidered half-size version of the sign worn by East and West Ridings (of Yorkshire) Area in the 1950s - a simple white rose on black square. I have nothing to link this to any unit, so it may be a candidate for the Signals Regiment's sign. Mike |

Stephen,
I'll post an image of the sign when I find it. A similar small sign of a white rose on a black rectangle has been attributed to 113 Regt RAC (formed 30 Jul 42 from 2/5 West Yorks). This does not preclude a similar design being worn post-War by 49 Div Sig Regt (TA). Mike |

This badge is around 43mm square and was purchased as "East & West Riding District", pencilled on the back is possibly East Riding Area".
Ive always thought it on the small side, although Catterick Garrison embroidered badges are the only comparison I own. Could it be to one of the R Sigs or RAC units mentioned, or is it to the District? I show it with the petal divisions to the top as this complies with the orientation of the writing on the back. |

East and West Ridings Area - 1950s and early 1960s - I think it should be about 48mm square when turned under and mounted (depending on the skill of the tailor). Mike

Thanks - its always struck me as rather small, but as I say - nothing in my collection to compare it with.

The small EonF white rose at bottom right is identical to mine. Unfortunately in the only IWM photographs of 113 Regt RAC that we could find, there were no signs to be seen at all. West Yorks badge on the black beret, but that was all. Very inconsiderate of the soldiers concerned! Mike

I have had this little printed White Rose for ages, unfolded 2 x 1½ inches.

Thanks Gents, we may not have got to the bottom of my original enquiry, but the thread has proved useful.
More contributions welcome. Stephen. |

We must wait for a response from those members who are true experts in the insignia of the Royal Corps of Signals. They are out there somewhere! Mike

Is it mentioned in the 'Badge and Embellishments' book or the little RSignals badges book.
