Dodgy Devonshire Regiment Buttons?
Hello all
Is it just me or do these "8 WW1 Edwardian Devonshire Regiment Buttons 100% Veteran Estate" look more like fashion buttons than the real deal? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2019320060...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT They are certainly neither World War One nor Edwardian with that crown, although I'm not sure whether it is supposed to be a QVC or current QC. Certainly I can't recall seeing that type of shank on Victorian period British military buttons. Any views anyone? Roger |

There are lots of these on ebay quite often in the USA.
You see the same reverse shank fitting with a GS style button, a friend showed me a handful of these and was convinced they were her Grandmothers from her time in the ATS, and she wasn't keen on my opinion that they were modern fashion buttons. I'm pretty sure they are modern fashion buttons, but I have now have a shadow of doubt in my mind, but then I never did believe in "100%" outside of mathematics. Rob |

Hello Rob
Thanks for the comments. I'm pretty sure they are not genuine issue military buttons and fashion buttons would be my choice. They certainly don't look good enough to be the genuine article but photos can sometimes be misleading. Roger |

Here are some pictures of a couple I ended up with from job lots.

These are common fashion buttons, most likely USA made and dating from the 1970s-1980s.
The D-shank (American button collectors' name) has been used on USA military buttons. |

Fashion.
The Crown is spurious - it has no Cross & Orb. I also have my doubts whether fashion manufacturers can legally make use of the Royal Crowns, probably that's the reason why we see bizarre representations of genuine regalia, including crowns GTB |

As always Gentlemen, you are ever knowledgeable on all things buttons. Thank you for your comments and for sharing the information. Rob Thanks for the photos, especially the close-ups which clearly show that the buttons are somewhat lacking in fine detail compared to the real thing. They do seem to be quite well made in comparison with some mock military fashion buttons though. Let's hope that no one falls for these Devonshire buttons. Thanks to you all Roger |
