What makes you think the regiment has any Chinese connection?.

I have never heard of the unit you refer to as a Great War era unit - and the abbreviation SPR is not an infantry rank abbreviation but that of a SAPPER.

If you were to supply the full naming details as shown on the rim of the medal someone it would be relatively easy to identify the unit for you.
