Default Genuine helmet plate?

Good afternoon

This is a Victorian type helmet plate that I was going to use as a replacement for a suspected copy plate.

I've never really been happy with this one on account of its colour but when you look closely you can see that it was once blackened.

Does it look right? It does look as though it has been polished and some of the finger detail may have been lost but I'm not too sure.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Regards

Martyn

Martyn,

I saw the KSB helmet plate and though the photos were deceptive, thought it probably OK. I notice Paul (I think) wasnt too happy about it and I understand his thinking. These plates are difficult to ID as genuine from photos and were quite coppery in colour which gives a "new" or "cleaned" appearance that can be confused with a fake. Having them in the hand is much better.

For what its worth this one looks OK also to me but again others may not be so sure.

regards

Many thanks for your reply Simon you are a star. I find these things difficult as there are so many variations and things look for. This plate does seem to have good detail obverse and reverse and has been polished so it may be OK. I thought that the plate on my borderers plate was ok buy again I'm not an expert. Hopefully they are both ok, that would be good.

Regards

Martyn

Hi Martyn,
I hope you don't mind but I have done a side by side for your Plates using your images, the one on the left is the one which came with your KOSB centre and the one on the right is the one on this thread.
I hope you can make out that the definition on the leaves and the stalk ends is far better on the one on the right. To be honest it would be easy to right off the one on the left but as I said on the other thread and Simon mentioned it would be far better to handle them.
I much prefer the one in this thread though.
Paul

Many thanks for your efforts I appreciate what you have done. I agree that the details are better on the one that you have selected as the best. Do you think that it would be a good idea to use that one for the plate centre?

Cheers

Martyn

Martyn,
I would keep them both as is at the moment. If you get the opportunity for someone to handle them be it another collector or a good dealer at a fair, most will be wiling to share knowledge and help out.
In the meantime if you yourself get a feel for them both you may notice a difference if not they may both turn out to be ok. Good luck.
Paul.
