mystery ww1 item.

I wonder if anyone can help me with this item, it came into my possesion as part of a collection of wwi militaria including medals, cap badges,shoulder
titles and some ephemera etc.
The item is made of 3 different peices of coloured cloth [in red ,white and blue] knotted in such a way that it may be a type of charity item.
I think i have at some time read about such items being sold to make money for soldiers charities etc.
Has anyone got any info about this item. cheers Andy.
