Old Corps of Commissionaires, can anybody ID it exactly, please?

Hi guys,

Just bought a Corps of Commissionaires badge, its damaged but for the price, it was worth grabbing, I have not seen one like it before.

Can anybody help me with a precise ID/period/use, please?

I have no measurements yet.

Phil. I don't really know but I think it is an old collar badge.

Cheers Jerry, that was one of my top guesses too. If it arrives in good time I will post measurements. Thought it was worth a risk for a fiver. My other feeling is that it could be Canadian or Australian.

Virtute et industria is the inscription on the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires Long Service medal but have no knowledge of it being used on a badge. That is also the motto of the City of Bristol... if that helps

Actually it's much like the device on the British badge and button for the Corps. Attached are the British badge and button, althgough not very clear, the motto looks the same on the button. And the British Columbian button from Canada. The photos were borrowed in good faith for this forum only.

Sorry for the delay in replying. The plot thickens! we have a Canadian inscription on a badge that is using a British design

I can not wait to see how big, or small, it turns out to be!!

Phil, why Bristol?? Is there any connection the badge and Bristol??
As this was a "UNIFORMED" organization would they ALL not wear the same where ever they were (UK)??

Guys, just keep in mind that the Corps of Commissionaires began as a national organisation and therefore always had the same badge for the UK, albeit any changes due to the time frame, if ever. Also for the button. Canada, Australia or wherever, could have had their own badge with local touches, but I believe that the motto was retained. The motto was used for all the UK and is also on the button as I've posted above. It's no use to speculate.
Another fact about the British CoC that's not being mentioned is, that in the late 1880s, they wore a prefix letter and number on each side of their 'stand-up' or 'Chinese' collars! http://www.soldiersofthequeen.com/Ol...iaVeteran.html

Hi Badge Guru,

Thank you for all that information and for providing the address for the London HQ. Much appreciated. I will be drafting a couple of letters later.

The badge was delivered today. It measures 3 inches x 1.5 inches. Lugged at each end of the scroll (vertically) and one at the top (horizontally).

Its pretty mangled up, so I am getting a jeweller to restore the end of the sword, before straightening it out etc myself.

My best guess now would be a cross belt or pouch badge??
