Another Rare Tasmanian
Here is another rare Tasmanian Rifle Club badge.
Riflemen from 36 Tasmanian Rifle Clubs were formed into one Auxiliary Force as a result of an act of Parliament in 1889. |

Hi Mick, unfortunately it has just the information I have posted. Not much on the internet about them. Will contact The Tasmanian Rifle Association they may be able to help.

Nice badges and hard to come by these days unless you have deep pockets. The Southern Tasmanian Artillery were a redesignation of the Southern Tasmanian Volunteer Artillery as the result of the Defence Act 1885 which created a partially paid force. The name change was in 1886, the badges are first mentioned in Dress Regulations promulgated in 1887. Keith |

thanks Keith
I couldn't believe my luck. I had seen it amongst some other British and Canadian titles but didn't initially recognise it. it played on my mind for almost an hour and luckily when I went back it was still there. it can now sit beside my STA helmet plate. I think this is the second title I have seen to this rgt the other being Phil's on this thread. in my reckoning harder to find than the HP cheers bc |

I think the Auxiliary Force became the 3rd Battalion, Tasmanian Infantry, about 1897 or 1898 and later the Tasmanian Rangers, with an equally rare and prized set of badges!

Many variations
I have never seen a list of just how many variations there are of Tas arty HPs.
Some have 'Volunteer', some don't, some have the motto and some don't. I believe there was a Derwent and a Launceston as well, not sure if there was ever one with just Tas arty (no 'Southern"). Quite surprising considering the tiny population of Tasmania at the time. This one is a bit battered but another interesting example. |

Hello BC,
Mine had a flat back too. I have since sold my Tasmanian Collection including that STA title, if you get in touch with me I can tell you where you can buy it. Providing of course the dealer still has it. Regards Phil. |
