Default Black Watch unusual (?) badge

Hi all,

can anyone tell me the purpose of this RH large collar type badge but with an unusual fitting?

The badge is 40mm high, 1 5/8" if you prefer.

regards, Iain

Ian, They are found in WM; bronze; chrome plate; silver plate; anodised ally; brass and silver. Either one thistle at feet or two, I have around thirteen different examples.
