Hi John,

I think the blackened Finsbury Rifles is wrong, it seems to have the die fault under the ' ARIS '........

Hi, I think the only two I would take a chance on are the 12th (Rangers) based on the look in general and the 17th Poplar and Stepney as the wreath isn't fully connected to the blank tablet.

Better if you had individual pics of front and back close up.

Simon.

Thanks Dave, Yes I’m with you on the black Finsbury Rifles

Simon, Why would the Rangers badge have what looks like a strengthening bar on the back?

Hi John, yes it is an oddity I have to say. I was really looking at the lugs from what I can see and the general detail on the rear, based on the original pics posted. But I would say, "an odd thing to take the effort if it was a fake". Maybe the team might have an idea if there is reason for this.

I still like the 17th Poplar. But I'm no "GURU" so it's just my take on them, if I was to see them on Ebay for example.

Simon.

Hello John,

I can only assume that the addition to the 12th London badge is a strengthening bar.

I have a similar badge and due to the bar on mine being bent outwards in the centre I thought it may have been a attempt at at alternative fixing method. Seeing your badge confirms that it is a strengthening bar so I may now go ahead and have mine repaired.

My badge can be seen in this thread.

As for the 17th London badge that you show, I'm afraid it isn't genuine. The leaves on the laurels not meeting the tablet are one clue and the other which was pointed out to me recently is that the lettering in the centre lacks serifs.

Regards

Ry

Hi Ry, your right. I got it mixed up on the wreath detail. I knew there was something read about it though, just chose the wrong way round.

ooops....

Hi Simon,

Although I have two good examples of the 17th London badge, one being an Officer's silver example. I have now had three less than honest examples. One of these was an out and out fake, modern made flimsy BB. The other two were WM, one of them blackened, I would have said that these badges had some age to them and that they were, apart from the give away faults, well made badges.
Luckily one came from a dealer who was happy for me to return it in favour of another good badge that had eluded me previously. All's well that ends well!

Ry

Default Rangers

A slidered 12th, with a strengthening bar, recently came up at auction, from the Gaunt Pattern Book stock.

That's interesting PJ,

I missed that one. Was it offered as part of a group lot?

I wonder why this particular badge is turning up with this feature when it is not to my knowledge foung on other badges of a similar design?

It would be nice to be able to put a date on the modification, as for that of the 1917 Royal Artillery badge. failing that, I'm pleased to know that my example shares this feature with other badges though and it points towards this being a common or possibly official addition.

Regards to all

Ry
