Recently bought this 51st Northern Queensland Regiment 1930-1942 hat badge converted to a sweethearts badge. Have to say it's up there with my favourites. Love it when you find great badges like this one.

Robert Tilburn who was one of the 3 survivors of the sinking of HMS Hood lived near us at a little town called Thornaby and he worked for the MoD at Eaglescliffe. Apparently, my sister in law was in the same class at school as his daughter and was a friend of the daughter visiting their house often. It is a small world.

KRRC Fiji
I don't have many sweetheart badges but I picked this rather nice badge up at a local collectors fair and then a month or two later, at the same venue though a different stall holder, the photograph (sorry for the orange hue). During WW1 many of the Europeans living in Fiji joined the Kings Royal Rifle Corps - they suffered very high casualties. The most detailed account of Fijians (Europeans and natives) who served is Qaravi Na'i Tavi They did their duty by Christine Liava'a published by Polygraphia Ltd in New Zealand. I seem to remember a similar badge though nicely enamelled being listed on E**y but a bit too pricey for me .
Steve PS I enjoy this thread |
