J&Co Maker's Mark, Opinions appreciated
Hello All
I've just seen this badge for sale and personally I don't think it is of a quality you would expect to see from Jennens. My main reason I have brought it to attention is that recently there have been 2 (separate auctions) bronzed Nelson Bn RND badges sold on ebay which I have been sceptical about, now I've seen this one I am even more suspicious. Is this a new fake maker's mark or am I doing it a dis-service? http://www.ebay.com/itm/WW1-British-...item35c6a1ba01 Paddy |

That looks way too rough for a J&Co Paddy, it looks awful on the back
I think you're right to be concerned mate, Wilf. |

I agree that the quality of Jennens' badges is superb and this does not appear to be of that quality. Before dismissing it however, some of Jennen's 'casting pattern' books survive amongst the Gaunt archives in London and in Birmingham and it might be worth studying these. I've been through them for KLR material but not, I'm afraid, for NF !
I've certainly discovered that there are Firmin 'type' badges and Gaunt 'type' badges out there - ie competitors copying F and G designs and it wouldn't surprise me if J badges were also so copied. |
