here is a first Life Guards button 1902-22 ... on your button there does appear to be a blob of a numeral there.... size of the button maybe?

Griff is spot on, 1st Life Guards. The '1' is either just not well defined due to the size of the button as Griff says) or polished out.

Thank you for the replies, in this case I'm not completely convinced, it's not really over polished and it looks more like a pretty clear upturned "v" than a "1".
