Having noted this thread concerning RNAS badges, I have an example which has puzzled me for some years.
I understood that they were collar badges, however my example appears to be an Officers' Service Dress Bronze with blades. When I obtained the badge, it came with two silver Armoured Car collar badges following the same pattern as shown by Neil. Annoyingly, I cannot find them - I have put them somewhere safe! The only photograph I have seen where the small Armoured Car collars were being worn, the Officer was wearing the standard Naval Badge. Any comments would be gratefully received Cheers Sepoy |

Very interesting Sepoy. Not being an expert, but this looks like a nice badge to me!
I am sure that I have read somewhere about silver collars, but for the life of me can't recall where. Can you recall if your silver pair are facing? I have never seen a "left" facing car collar, but have to assume it exists? Regards, Neil |

Most of my collection is in storage and I must confess that I cannot remember which way the collars faced. When I get a chance, I will dig them out and scan them.

Hi
Information taken from Badges & Insignia of the British Armed Services states badges bronze or gilt. I am very interested in the cast bronze badge shown, which has lugs, since I have never seen this variant. Photograph of rating wearing large collar badges, I have seen a photo of a rating wearing a smaller collar badge on ebay, unfortunately I did not bid enough, also I have seen on ebay a photograph of a Petty Officer wearing officer's collar badges (just the armoured car and both facing the same way). Note also there are RAF Armoured Car badges, post 1WW, that have just the armoured car (no oval) with a number beneath, I have seen silver with No 2 attached. As with a number of other naval badges of this period, variations, local manufacture etc are never recorded, even some official ones have no record, but are depicted in a number of photographd John |

Neil,
refer to page 7 of this section. Thread entitled 'RND....all sorts' by me,where I showed a 'left' facing Officers' collar, belonging to a friend of mine. |

Folks,
I've dug this old thread up as I am interested in post #18's badge and a badge that I have. Sepoy clearly has an OSD badge with blades and voided crown. Why would a collar badge have blades? The answer may be that it was worn by officers on their cap. There is no photographic proof of this but to me the blades indicate a strong suggestion that it was worn on the cap. I also have a bronze cast badge that once had blades and a non-voided crown. It is not of the same construction as the OSD shown by Sepoy and appears to be locally made. The rear has severe pitting. The blades have been removed and replaced with loops. A close-up photo shows that they were blades and not loops. Could this be an example made circa 1917 while the squadron were engaged in operation near Gaza (Palestine)? |
