Major's metal rank crowns
I am currently trying to come up with a sane method to inventory my various bits of officers rank insignia (crowns and stars) that deserve better treatment, i.e. a display that does them justice, rather than just lying among other accumulations of insignia in drawers (admittedly for lack of space).
I am starting off with the various metal Major's Tudor (KC) crowns and I am going round in circles trying to glean information from the Web as I lack Dress Regs (1904, 1911, 1934 that I know of). When this has been satisfactorily settled I then hope to identify the corresponding 'pips' that were worn concurrently. Perhaps anyone possessing these DGs in their library could help out? Thanks in advance. I have noticed that there are at least 2 types of above-mentioned crown - (a) with 'cap' as integral part of the design; (b) with separate 'cap' of crimson fabric i.e. velvet. Again, there are two types of the latter, where (i) the fabric is same size as the 'cap' and (ii) where the fabric fills the void up to the arches of the crown. I suppose these differences would have something to do with the uniform they are to be worn on? In the attached scan, the top row is 1'', the second row 3/4", and the single crown in third row is 5/8". The full range of metals is: OSD bz, black, g/m, gilt, blackened (bronze), silvered Comments welcome |

I put these sets together about 20 years ago and they are not complete!
I paired crowns with pips based on size, material matching and visual aesthetics although some were obtained already paired. Tim

Dress Regulations 1900 and 1934 do not help much. Here are some extracts:

Tim,
Great stuff! A fine collection indeed and thanks for sharing. The pairings provide an excellent point of reference although I do miss the assistance of captions. Thanks also for the extracts, which are useful. I have the 1900 Dress Regs, but that refers to QVC. Attaching a scan of a display to show what I mean by "doing them justice", although there is no way that I can continue along this path. Your display method is adequate for me. GTB |
