Default royal malta artillery mess waiter's button??

For general interest I am posting this Victorian era RMA small (16mm) gilt open backed button, which unconfirmed sources have attributed as possibly being a mess waiter's button.
The RMA was a part of the British Army in its own right, and was included under various Dress Regulations. Normal RA buttons were worn, however Mess Waiters buttons were governed by the regiment itself and so i believe Sealed Patterns are non-existent??
It would be a boon to have this button definitively confirmed and not just attributed

Hello GTB

Sorry but I cannot positively confirm that it is a mess waiter's button but I do have it down as such in my records, so at least there are two of us that think it is!

As you say, these buttons were very much unofficial so it is very difficult to positively confirm the identity of some.

Hi Roger

Thanks for your continued support and sharing of knowledge.

There are actually more than the two of us who think this button could be a mess waiters button, including my good friend Denis Darmanin (the button guru).

Design very much resembles the Royal Malta Militia, Imperial Crown type.

I love this button!!!

I had posted the same query a few months back, and like you I could not find a definite confirmation regarding this button! As Denis has state in his article on Treasures of Malta 55, Christmas 2012, "it's a common belief......".

However with what Denis has written and Roger's contribution I take it that it is a Mess Waiters Button till proven otherwise.

Shame to say, I haven't visited Fort Rinella as yet, maybe that's where we could find some answers to this query.

Regards.
