Formed in 1951 The Military Heraldry Society is dedicated to the study of cloth badges of all types. Our journal, started as
The Bulletin in April 1951 and renamed
The Formation Sign in 1967, has been regularly published for over fifty years. It has always contained illustrations of cloth badges, originally hand-drawn, later photocopied (in colour from September 1999). Since January 2007 each twelve page, quarterly issue has been printed in full colour.
The Journal contains full-length articles as well as snippets of information on the origins and use of a wide variety of cloth badges. Past contributing members have included W Y (Bill) Carman, Brian L Davis, John Gaylor, John Mollo, Guido Rosignoli, Marc Sherriff and Len Whittaker, all of whom have published books on aspects of military insignia. Extensive contributions have also come from other members who are experts in their field. Each issue covers a range of topics from older badges from both world wars to newly-released insignia worn in Afghanistan. The majority of articles cover British and Commonwealth inisgnia but there are regular contributions on insignia from other countries - the latest issue covers formation signs of the modern Greek Army. Some recent front covers are shown here.
It is now possible to join the Society by filling in a membership form on the society's website
http://militaryheraldrysociety.com/ with annual subscriptions payable by Paypal. Have a look at the site and see if the Society is for you - quite a few Forum contributors are Members. New members who join now will receive all the issues of the Formation Sign for 2012. Memberships renewals (which can be done through the website) are due in January each year.
In addition the Society holds regular meetings at which members can share their latest finds with like-minded enthusiasts.
