Default Lieutenant H.A. Hall. South African Heavy Artillery.

I already posted a photo of an officer wearing this cap badge, then again another one which I think is IMO one of the best looking artillery badge.....

I see he's wearing normal artillery collars and not the small SAHA collars.

Hi Alex,
Officers in the SAHA always wore grenade collars with title 'SOUTH AFRICA' and other ranks without collar badges.

I have never seen a photograph of SAHA with those small SAHA collars and it is my opinion that they were either a private purchase cap badge or if produced during WWI, that it was for some other use and not as collar badges.
The Castle Museum has a nice photograph album and history put together by I believe the commanding officer of the unit and none of the photographs show small SAHA badges.

If someone can produce a picture of SAHA wearing these on the collars, I will retract my opinion above.

Do you know if the Research Library is still accessible at the Castle? I know the that the guy that was there has now left. There were some interesting books in their collection, found the "unofficial History of the NFA" there, had heard about it but was shocked to see one of the 3 copies.

Hi Brian,
I believe it still is though the museum curator has emigrated, I believe there is still a librarian and a 'stand in' curator (admin position to fill the seat but not a museum person).

If you are coming down to CT, try calling the Castle and ask to speak with someone in the museum to get access to the library.

I think their cast OSD cap badges are particularly pleasing ones.

Good day gents. Does anyone knows who the maker was for the SAHA badge shown by Frank Kelly, either very possibly J.R.Gaunt or someone in South Africa ????

Frank this is a beauty, never seen one before but have heard about them.

Suspect they were produced by Gaunt? Does your one have a maker name?
