Just ,

Its' more likely an escape compass/trouser fly button compass.
WW2 aircrew and the like had them for escape and evasion .
I don't know if the SAS did . Don't know if they had the need .

Hi Didier, this is an MI-9 Escape and Evasion item. As Jock mentioned and illustrated on part of the page of "Per Ardua Libertas", a quite rare book of MI-9's various devices. As with all such Escape Aids they were available to other Services. The pattern that you have can be found in Brass and painted Black. The image I attach shows a few of these and some other patterns.
