Australian Orders of Battle WW2.
Does anyone know of a book or other documentary source for an orbat for the Australian Army in WW2? Ideally I would like the equivalent of the British Joslen, if Australia ever produced such a thing. The query is in connection with a project to catalogue a collection of Australian patches.
I have also been looking, without success, for copies of the following: ARMY COLOUR PATCH REGISTER 1915 - 1949. Alfred Festburg's LINEAGE OF THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY. Stephen Tauberg's FORMATION SIGNS AND VEHICLE MARKINGS OF THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY 1903 - 1983. It would be too much to expect anyone to have copies of these for sale but if anyone can suggest a likely specialist book dealer in Australia I would be grateful. I feel a bit cut off here in Warwickshire in the UK! |

Hello BEFman and welcome to the Forum. As for your search, here is a source from Diggerhistory. Perhaps you will find what you are looking for but, be advised that this list is probably not complete or up-to-date for all the units. We were told by fellow Aussies members that sometimes there are mistakes in this website, so be careful in taking this as gospel.

I agree with Jo - I would only rate the site at about 6/10 for accuracy.
Plenty of errors on there I'm afraid. Mick |

Yes be careful of the site. Generally good but quite a few errors. I have advised him of some corrections but never heard back or saw them changed.

If you PM me your postal address, I'll send you a photocopy of an article that appeared about 20 years ago in Sabretache, the journal of the Military Historical Association of Australia, giving a succinct outline of how the AIF orbats evolved in WW2. It won't, however, solve all the issues re the militia and so forth, which can get very complicated. |

Thanks to all who replied. Very helpful.
Apologies also. When I made my enquiry I forgot I was going to be away for a few days so my failure to respond in a timely manner is not rudeness, just the anno domini effect on the memory! |

Australian ORBAT
Hi,
I can recommend the following bookshops in Australia, having visited both in the last few weeks: Alexander Fax Booksellers, Southlands Shopping Centre, Mawson, ACT. (www.alexanderfaxbooks.com.au)- stocks secondhand books, specialising in military & transport. He had copies of Festburg badge books and something on colour patches but I didn't take much interest so cannot recall if they were what you are chasing. Highlands Bookshop, Level 1, 29-31 Heffernan Lane, Melbourne. (www.hylandsbookshop.com.au)- stocks a vast range of new military & transport books. Regards, Stephen. |

I have a spare copy of the Colour Patch Register - but the postage will be the killer as it is quite a heavy book.
