oversea stripes - good conduct
i had buy the 2 stripes below...
for me the 5 red stripes is for 5 years oversea service before 1914... the second, i dont know  perhaps good conduct !!!perhaps somebody can help me  is it possible that they came from royal artillery ?

They are both worn point up on the right cuff. The large blue ones are WWI and the small red ones are WWII.
SERVICE CHEVRONS, OVERSEAS Red or Blue worn on the lower right sleeve of the Service Dress Jacket. One for each 12 months service overseas, the first starting on the day of departure. Red for service before the 31st of December 1914, then Blue afterwards. Embroidered in red or blue cotton on to a khaki background, chevron ¼ inch wide with arms 1¼ inches long. Army Order number 4 of January 1918 published on 20th December 1917. (1918-1922) SERVICE CHEVRONS Red, worn on the lower right sleeve of the Service Dress Jacket and Battledress Blouse. One for each year of service, after 3rd September 1939. Printed or embroidered in red on a khaki background, chevron 3/16 inch wide with arms 3/4 inch long. AO 19 of 14th February 1944

For Canadian service, the red service stripes are each for one years overseas service after 1940. A white / silver stripe was worn by those who had entered the service before September 10, 1940.
They were worn by all regiments / corps.

To exspand on 54Bty
WWI Overseas Service Stripes were awarded in 1918 and could be worn in combination with Good Conduct Stripes, and were not limited to junior ranks. One Blue Chevron was worn for each years service overseas, with a Red Chevron indicating that the soldier went overseas before 31st December 1914. Four Blue Chevrons and One Red Chevron was the maximum awarded.  WWII The WWII Red 'War Service' Chevrons could also be worn by UK Civil Defence & Home Gaurd as well, and a maximum of 6 could be worn.

Chevrons
I cannot find the relevant ACI immediately, but I thought the red chevrons were only authorised during WW2 in the printed format. Embroidered insignia of any sort was forbidden. As such I've treated embroided versions with suspicion. Does anyone actually own a Battle-dress blouse or service dress jacket with original embroidered chevrons on it?

Hello Stephen, In the Canadian case, almost all the service chevrons are embroidered, and the printed pattern are scarce. I can't remember seeing a tunic with printed service chevrons.

The NAM have several, and both the Denis Edwards collection at NAM, and I, have genuine examples. Qualifying service ceased May 1920, by Army Order. So maximum 1 plus 5.
