Button ID please

Hi All
I got this today and would like to know what it is. It looks like the Victorian button used by Colonels & Brigadiers but the crown position and style is different to the example shown in Ripley's book. Any ideas?

Hello Alex

I have one of these buttons as well and have always thought it to be a 'Court' button rather than a military one. The design does turn up from time to time but not as often as the standard 'Colonels' rank one.

It may just be a manufacturer's variation but I think this is unlikely as I see yours is by Pitt & Co whereas mine is by Jennens, so there were at least two manufacturers producing this design, unusual for a simple variation or error in design.

Hopefully someone else may have a little more information.

Could they be an earlier or later pattern of Colonel's button?

British Buttons by Dennis G. Blair has this one identified as one of the two VR patterns worn by H.M. Equerries and Aides-de-Camp, former Regular Army Officers.

Somehow I can't reconcile myself to the design of the 'VR' which is not a cypher, more of an ornate monogram. Only my opinion.
