Default The Duke of Edinburgh’s Trophy

I found this intriguing snippet, and wondered if anyone could fill in details of the trophy.

31.07.58. Army Order 59.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Trophy.
Approval for medallions to be worn on right breast pocket of the uniform, except Welsh Guards in Full Dress.

I do not think it relates to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme, even though that scheme started in 1956, as most soldiers would have been too old to take part.

Stephen.

The competition was an internal competition (fitness, shooting and general soldiering) in all those regiments having the Duke of Edinburgh as Colonel in Chief. The idea was a good one but sadly was not maintained due to the government imposed rush to amalgamation and disbandment. One of the so-called "Golden Threads" which broke at the first tension.

Thank you. Amazing what you can find out thanks to the help of others.

Now, has anyone got a photo of one?

Stephen.

The Queens Royal Irish Hussars had the Duke of Edinburgh as their Colonel. Each year the Regiment had an inter Squadron Competition, the winners then became the Duke of Edinburgh's Squadron for the year wearing the DOE cypher low down on the left sleeve.
