SBS Sicily
Not a book review, but does any Forum member have a copy of Eric Newby's book "Love and War in the Apennines" - which includes his misadventures in Sicily with the SBS. Thanks.

Thomas, Many thanks - to my astonishment my sister has four of his books including the one I want to reread. Somewhere in Eric Newby's published works is a discussion he had with an early SAS soldier who claimed to have designed a beret badge (very complex design and quite unlike an SAS badge) and he was asking his boss's permission to have some made and wear them. As far as I recall Eric Newby's response was " I don't mind one way or the other" (or similar words). Does that ring a bell with you? Mike

It has been at least a decade since I read the book, and my general recollection is that it was light on military matters. I'm fairly sure that if such a thing was actually mentioned I would clearly remember. I'll see if I can find anything like that in it tonight.
Having said that, I think there are many worse ways to while away time than by (re)reading anything by Newby. Rgds, Thomas. |

A few years ago I bumped into him and his wife when my wife and I were coming out of Fortnum & Mason's in Piccadilly and they were going in. I held the door open for them, he doffed his trilby like a true gent of his time, and then we were gone. It was only a few minutes later that I realized who it was! The following year he died.
