Malc,
Smashing photo. I have a slidered version and it is identical to the collars so I am fairly sure that they are from the same die and it was only the choice of fixing that determined whether they ended up as a collar or a cap. The later 13/18th badges caps and collars are the same and only differ in their type of fixings. Alan |

!3th/18th Hussars 5 Bar Gate
Hi Malcolm
Known in the regiment as the 5 Bar Gate badge. These are mine; still looking for a second collar badge. Best wishes Gordon |

I guess his cap broke as we understand they did. He might have been one of the first recipients of the new style.

The sealed pattern for the badge was 1938 but clearly as this soldier is wearing Battledress then this photo is probably 1940 or later. Collars were not supposed to be worn soon after than but being the cavalry they may have ignored this ruling and the photo could be mid or even late war.

Cheers Alan for confirming the date of when the "Z" badge came in.

It's given as 1938 in Gaylor's book but oddly K&K do not give a sealed pattern date.

This page has a copy of the 13th/18th History 1922-47. One of the last photos is a SNCO in 1944 being awarded a medal by Monty. He is clearly wearing the QMO arm badge and 5 bar gate collars. Probably these were not normal combat wear but was his smart uniform for the ceremony. There is a pathe newsreel from 1939 where collars are not worn in the new BD when the regt was on parade for Queen Mary herself. Last edited by Alan O; 11-12-18 at 01:41 PM. |

Quote:
The chap in the photo is Sgt Bayes and as you can see the photo dates from 1935 onwards as he is wearing the medal that he won in that year. From the regimental history published in 1947: Serjeant W. Bayes gained credit for the Regiment, and distinction for himself, by winning the King's Medal at MEERUT in 1935 and being runner-up in 1936. The 5 bar gate collar incorporates the QMO title that was authorised for inclusion in the formal regimental title of 13th/18th (QMO) Hussars in 1935. The Regimental Standing Orders of the 13th/18th Hussars published in 1934 a year before the change of title has the '5-bar gate' badge on its inside cover so its use predates the change in title.
