Default Efficiency Badge (Volunteers) Diamond Lozenge

I bought a copy of Edwards and Langley's British Army Proficiency Badges earlier this year but like most good books it always seems to lead to more questions.

So was this badge with scarlet backing worn on a green Volunteer Rifles uniform, it seems odd if they were also made with a green backing?

It measures 73mm by 37mm.
