17th Indian Division 4th Gurkha Rifles
This extract from an old copy of The Formation Sign Journal of the Military Heraldry Society records an early pattern sign said to have been used by 17th Indian Infantry Division before it adopted the more familiar black cat.
The source of the information is said to be the regimental history of the 4th Gurkha Rifles. Has anyone ever seen an example of the sign and does anyone have a copy of the history mentioned and could see if they can trace the reference? Many thanks for any help. Jon |

Sorry Jon - I've got a copy of the first volume of the Regimental History but it ends at 1939. I thought that the earlier pattern of the 17th Indian Division sign was a blue square introduced in 1942? Tim

Tim,
Thanks for coming back to me. You are right the first pattern - for which there is official documentary evidence - was the blue square introduced in 1942. But two M Her Soc members suggested the lightning flash so I was trying to establish if the ref mentioned could be found to see what it says. Regards Jon |
