Default Duke of Edinburghs Own Volunteer Rifles

Hello all

I have this cap badge to the Duke of Edinburghs Own Volunteers Rifles. "The Dukes". Badge is lugged and also has clip to reverse.

Please let me know what you guys think.

best regards,

Looks Like a good one. Volunteers was pre 1913. The yellow inset is correct as this was the facing color of the Dukes uniform at the time. The red backing as far as i am aware is not correct and the badge was not worn with a red border. This looks like it was added by a collector for display purposes.

Tinto,
I believe your second badge without crown is a pipers cross belt badge and was attached to a large rectangle polished white-metal plate.

The red center may have been for a 2nd battalion if memory serves.

Hi All,

I picked up this Dukes badge the other day but this differs inasmuch as it has 3 wires; would it have been from a helmet plate?

Colin Owen (O6) has it as a cap badge worn from 1899 - 1902

As this badge does not have the coronet at the top, it must date from some time between the 1870s and 1898. At that time, the helmet plate was a crowned Maltese cross with the badge in the centre of the cross. The coronet was added to the badge in 1898, and the helmet plate was changed a few years later to a large version of the badge.

Hi Arthur,

would the small helmet plate you refer to above be O3? The helmet badge size is identical.

Hi Iain

Sorry, I don't have a copy of Owen to hand right now to check the number.

Hi Iain

I've had a look at Owen and, yes, photo no 3 is the helmet plate I was thinking of.
