Hello Alan

Your button would appear to be for the 37th (North Hampshire) Regiment of Foot. It looks to have a rim which would make it a tunic button for the period 1855-1881. It is difficult to tell whether it is officer or other ranks quality, I suspect other ranks which would reduce the period of use to 1855-1872 when other ranks stopped using regimental pattern buttons and used a 'General Service' pattern - the Royal arms.

That said, the pattern you have - a crown over 37 within a circle (or so it appears to me) - is not the usual pattern of button associated with the 37th at this time. It was usually a crown over 37 within a laurel wreath. I may well have missed something obvious here, so hopefully some other member will pop along to add their bit!

As Roger says, difficult to tell whether Officer or OR. The image of the back is very blurred but from what I am deducing, it appears to be a closed-back spun manufacture and if so, this is associated with Officer quality.

The manufacturer is contemporary with 1850/1860 period, so it ties in with the 1855 uniform change. You may browse the button maker and possibly come up with a time range. thereby further confirming date of button. Squire illustrates an identical button and captions it as OR's brass, 1855. You are in a better position, however, to confirm the metal and quality.

As with all collectables, a collector specialising in the unit would find it more desirable.

Incidentally, I thought I had something to the 37th Ft.
Here they are:

Top two - ORs brass, 19mm, 'STILLWELL & Co. LONDON'
Bottom two: ORs brass, 18mm, no b/m
Both are to the 1855 pattern.

Hello GTB

Indeed yes, this is the pattern of button for the 37th Foot that I am more familiar with!
