The new book on British Army Cap Badges of the First World War shows a picture of this and suggests it is a fantasy badge. David

Hi David.

Absolutely.

This badge pattern has been discussed on here previously, with the same conclusion. It is a fantasy.

I have seen a dealer's list offereing a Sweetheart badge to this Battalion, but who knows though, perhaps Sweetheart badges were produced in this form to identify that the giver was actually in one of the "Footballers" Battalions as distinct from the others.

I do hope nobody shells out the shekels to buy this particular piece though, no matter how pretty it may look.

Regards
Brian

I thought that this might just have been a sweetheart, but on receiving the size, it is 1 7/8" x 1 7/8" and just stamped "SILVER"

Enough said...........

That's interesting.

Have your own trophy belt made, with badges of your choice.

It also confirms my thought that Footballer battalion blokes could have their own sweetheart badges produced, identifying that the wearer's sweetheart was in said Battalion, as distinct from other Middlesex soldiers.

Not on the bit that I have got which is a photocopy of the original catalogue. Plenty of Great War variant badges so I guess that is Great War vintage. I will post a few examples.

The photo showing the wreathed badge of the Corps of Military Police means that the catalogue has to be dated post 1926. A wide variety of imperial yeomanry and territorial yeomanry badges on offer. It is interesting for me that if these badges were being churned out for collectors, why have I never seen a Lincs Imp Yeo badge as advertised in the catalogue?

1926 would make sense as these badges would still have been popular. Here are some more pages.

Strange though, unless it's just me, he wears a badge, (looks like a fusiliers pattern), but not apparently, to a unit given as an option for the choice of locket/button/brooch.
