US 5th Army Sign wworn by British Troops
During the WW2 Italian campaign many British troops served under the command of the US 5th Army and wore their formation sign, a sample of which is shown.
I was wondering if the badge they wore was the American issue or was there a British or Italian-made version. Anyone any thoughts? Jon |

The one I was given by a veteran Gunner are the US issued type, he did mention that they were worn on his best BD.

Jon, there are a number of manufacturing variations to this patch from the era. U.S. made fully embroidered, Italian hand made bullion, cloth, chain stitched and a woven variation also exists
My guess is that all were readily available in theater. With all that said I have never to my recollection seen a printed version similar to British made signs from the period. Are there any photos out that show British soldiers wearing the 5th Army patch? Interesting question. Jack

Hi Irish,Jon
I replied to this thread on another forum, which shows a British soldier wearing a Fifth US Army SSI. To me it looks like a theatre made SSI. http://www.warrelics.eu/forum/unifor...-patch-673047/ Phill |

I won the photo mentioned on the war relics site so here it is. Looks like a US style badge. Thanks for the info about other styles.

Badge typically of British manufacture or style.
Came with a number of issue badges and paper ephemera to a Pte J. Jennings, No.1 Boring Platoon R.E. |
