Default Another Interesting Item, Can You Identify

I have another iteresting item I have just acquired and would like help in identifying if possible please.

This is a nice leather belt with an inbuilt loop.

The Badge appears to me to be a Queen Vic crown but is quite large at 9.5 cm height x 5 cm at its widest point.

Markings are : D Masons & Sons, Q & M 1885, Birmingham
and W-D with Arrow

Condition is great, it really is almost and dare I say it, Nice almost.

It the back of my memory I would think it is possibly NSW but I don't know and hopefully someone here can help please.

Thank you

Could it be the part of the harness that holds the tail up and out of the way.

Maybe but I think the location of the Badge would be a little strange then...

I'm looking at the shape of the loop and not just saddles But carriage or wagon harness.

Hi,

Just for the record these badges are generally referred to in the military as: “Martingales”, and were worn on the harness at the horse’s breast.

mar•tin•gale also mar•tin•gal

1. The strap of a horse's harness that connects the girth to the noseband and is designed to prevent the horse from throwing back its head.

Regards,

Zob.

I am with magpie and old smelly. It looks like a crupper to me. The horse's tail goes through the loop and the strap attaches to the saddle to stop it sliding forward.

Default Crupper

Hi Lionheart

I agree with Donny. It's a crupper. It looks after the back end of the horse rather than the front.

Best wishes

Gordon

PS Not a problem we had with tanks.
