Looking to ID these UK badges
Hi Everyone,
A mate of mine in his 70s has these badges and he is looking to get them ID'ed for future sale. It would be appreciated if I can get an ID on these (as I am not an expert on older UK badges) and also a value for them. My mate is wanting a fair price for these when he sells them hence wanting to know a rough value for them. They will be listed for sale here as well. If anyone is interested in them, send me PM. Regards, Mick

Hi Mick
I believe the Welsh Guards pagri badge is a repro. The genuine ones should be voided and there should be 2 small blades on the back to secure the backing cloth. Cheers, Alex |

I would only place a glengarry which had brass lugs in my collection The 84th looks like it has brass lugs The others could be Fox"s or latter A member here has written a book on 1851-1881 glengarry badges

Pre 1881, really
The 90th, in particular, looks as though it was made last week. |

Hi Mick
I thought I would try and put some of the above posts into context by giving you an "over-view" of the glengarry badges. This pattern badge falls into three main categories: 1) Original Badges - first introduced for wear on the "new" glengarry in the late 1860's and fully in use by c.1873. They were worn until 1881. As you can see, the period of use was quite short and genuine badges are not common. 2) Fox Restrikes/Copies - made in the late 1890's/early 1900's by the Fox Company, quite possibly using original dies. Many of these badges have been absorbed into collections over the past 100/120 years and are thought of as genuine but are not period pieces. 3) "Modern" Fakes - these have been turned out by the "shed load" over the past 40/50 years. Sometimes sold initially as copies, sometimes not. I'm certainly no expert on these badges and really wouldn't like to suggest what period your badges are from. The 84th Foot is probably the best of the bunch in my opinion. The brass lugs are a good sign but I've seen an example with N/S lugs and also one with E/W lugs and in both cases the owners (both knowledgeable collectors) were totally convinced they were genuine. Forum member JEFF McWILLIAM is an acknowledged expert on these badges. Hope this helps? David Last edited by davidwyke; 07-02-16 at 09:18 PM. |
