The Officer (left) does appear to have a grey patch behind his S/G small eagle?

Lovely photo, do you think it could be immediately in occupation duties? My own feeling is the badge backing was introduced almost immediately upon occupation duties, is there a date on the photo? I'll have another look at my friend's photo album which goes into occupation and see if ORs have adopted the backing that quickly.

This photo is of Cpl Goodacre taken in Denmark 1944, sadly we don't know the month it was taken but in his album there are several Denmark photos where he isn't wearing a backing so the guess is it's closer to October 1944 than May/June. There is also a squadron photo taken at Eutin, Germany in November and most men are sporting a 'grey' badge backing on their black berets, the regiment moved to Eutin from Denmark in November 1944. The backing looks 'grey' and is a triangular egg shape.

Surely you mean 1945 instead of 1944? The only British soldiers in Denmark, if any, in 1944 would've been SOE!

Rgds, Thomas.

Apologies!! Of course they should all read 1945, not 1944, thanks for pointing out.

My photo comes from Major Balfour's WW2 album and shows Jimmy Coombes and Kenneth Timbrell shown on the right and I believe was taken at the end of the war. There are photos of other ranks with a grey backing to their cap badges taken in Denmark in 1945.
